What is a Straight Ally?
An important factor for an LGBT person to feel comfortable in a given community is the knowledge that the environment includes straight allies. These allies are friends and colleagues who model inclusive behavior, speak out against prejudice and discrimination and are open and accepting of their LGBT colleagues. They help foster a positive and inclusive environment, free from discrimination.
Like LGBT individuals, straight allies can also go through a series of stages in their own willingness and comfort level in being known as an open ally. Because of social or political climates, it can be quite difficult for someone to be open and accepting of the LGBT individuals, especially in the Academy’s extended community.
These straight allies are often just as courageous as the LGBT folks they support and are a valued part of a more open and accepting community.
While we hope for a time when the service of USAFA cadets and graduates is recognized without regard to sexual orientation or gender identity, we believe there is much that can be done right now to improve the environment in our community for LGBT individuals. Your support as a straight ally is an important step in that direction.
